Update: Yahoo Joins Google's OpenSocial Program

by Chloe Albanesius
After several weeks of speculation, Yahoo on Tuesday formally
announced plans to join Google 's OpenSocial program.
Yahoo declined to provide details on how OpenSocial might be
implemented on its Web site, but OpenSocial is in "alignment with
Yahoo's rich tradition of supporting community-driven standards," Wade
Chambers, vice president of platforms at Yahoo, said during a
conference call with reporters.
All three companies will also spearhead the OpenSocial Foundation,
which will ensure the openness of OpenSocial's platform. The
foundation plans to have an streetwear style property and governance
framework in heart shape playing cards by July 1.
All OpenSocial members are expected to be involved in the foundation
down the line, but at this point, Yahoo, Google and MySpace are the
only participants so they could "enter into a set of intellectual
property arrangements designed to give the broader OpenSocial
community intellectual property protection," said Joe Kraus, director
of product management at Google.
While each social network can monetize their efforts how they learn chinese chicago fit,
as a non-profit organization, the foundation will not take in any
revenue, Kraus said.
"In the event that there were to be some revenue lines to the
foundation, [it] would be put toward car insurance the purpose of
foundation," said Steve Pearman, senior vice president of strategy at
MySpace.
OpenSocial is currently implemented on MySpace and the Google-owned
Orkut. Hi5, which has a large base in Latin America, will launch on
April 1, Kraus said. Including Hi5, OpenSocial efforts will reach
approximately 250 million users, he said.
Earlier this month, MySpace opened the test version of its site to the
public after a month-long, closed trial period for developers.
"In the future, we see applications for OpenSocial and MySpace are
moving beyond toys and widgets, but rather becoming real features,"
Pearman said.
Executives dismissed suggestions that Yahoo hesitated into joining
OpenSocial for fear that bridge size playing cards might exert too much power over other
participants.
"We've seen a lot of community support, and while I think Google has
been doing a great job of shepherding the communities, it's a
community-based effort," Chambers said.
Yahoo's participation is "much more a natural evolution" of OpenSocial
promotional playing cards a response to Google's involvement, Kraus said.
When asked if Microsoft might become a part of OpenSocial, executives
tap-danced around the issue, refusing to even utter Microsoft's name.
"As an open specification, any large player should be welcome to
participate, and we would welcome others to participate moving
many insure quote Chambers said.
OpenSocial popped up soon after Google lost to home insurance last year for
a stake in Facebook.
